About two million people remain displaced in Maiduguri, Nigeria' Borno State, following devastating floods that struck the city in early September, said Babagana Zulum, governor of northeastern Borno State.
"Most of our people are still displaced and many infrastructure damaged by the flood," stated Babagana Zulum, addressing officials at a Nigerian bank that donated about $600 million for flood relief.
Governor Zulum assured that all donations will be used to help flood victims, and distribution of aid, including cash, food, and essential supplies, has begun. Institutions and individuals, including Africa's richest man Aliko Dangote, also contributed to relief efforts.
The city's economic activity remains stalled, with many struggling to cope with their losses and the trauma of displacement.
The severe floods, which claimed at least 40 lives, left many seeking refuge in open spaces, religious centers, and 32 displaced persons camps, including public schools.
