Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Vershinin took part in the meeting of the African Union's Committee of Ten on the UN Security Council reform and the five permanent members of the Security Council, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
Vershinin stressed the need to expand the Security Council by exclusively including Global South nations from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He emphasized the importance of increased African representation to address historical injustices and reflect the continent's growing role in the multipolar world order.
The Russian diplomat acknowledged the ongoing challenges in reaching consensus on UN Security Council reform. He emphasized that the development of a consensus model for reorganizing the Security Council will give this most important body of the UN system a more democratic character and increase its effectiveness.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia supports India, Brazil, and an African nation becoming permanent members of the UN Security Council, expressing support for their legitimate aspirations for increased representation.
