Somalia Becomes the 179th Member of the IAEA

Somalia has become the newest and 179th member of the IAEA on Monday. Admission to the organization is a significant milestone reflecting the country’s commitment to promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
“This is a historic moment for Somalia, signifying our deep commitment to international cooperation, peace, and the responsible use of advanced technologies for the benefit of our people,” reads the statement issued by the Federal Government of Somalia on the occasion.
IAEA Chief Says Worried Iran Nuclear Sites May Potentially Become Targets
The Somali government emphasized that nuclear technology, when used peacefully, offers great potential to address many challenges, from improving health and agriculture to better management of natural resources and increasing resilience to climate change.
“By joining the IAEA, Somalia seeks to harness the benefits of nuclear technology in a way that is safe, secure, and sustainable, and fully compliant with international standards and regulations,” the statement noted.
