The Panama Canal Authority announced that on Friday, a 17,640-container Liberian-flagged commercial vessel broke the record for the largest container ship to pass through the canal in its 110 years of operation.
The 366-meter-long, 51-meter-wide container ship MSC Marie crossed the canal from Mexico's Pacific port of Manzanillo to a port on the Caribbean coast of Panama. The container ship reportedly paid more than $1.3 million for its passage through the canal.
According to a statement from the Panama Canal Authority, the previous record was held by the 17,312-container Ever Max, which crossed the canal in 2023.
