President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has appointed new heads for the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Department of State Security (DSS), a move that comes after the abrupt resignations of their predecessors last week.
Mohammed Mohammed, previously Nigeria's ambassador to Libya, will take the helm of the NIA, while Adeola Ajayi will lead the DSS.
The former agency chiefs, appointed in 2018 by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, did not provide reasons for their resignations.
President Tinubu is prioritizing intelligence gathering to combat these threats and improve security across the country amid widespread kidnapping for ransom by armed gangs and a decade-long insurgency in Nigeria's northeast.
