Rising water levels caused by prolonged heavy rains have caused a transportation crisis, cutting off road links between the Nigerien capital, Niamey, and a number of cities in the southwest of the country, local news portal AES Info reported.
Authorities are reportedly advising drivers to exercise extreme caution and follow safety instructions. The Ministry of Transport assured that measures are being taken to restore traffic as soon as possible.
Floods have been reported in all eight regions of Niger, including Niamey. About a hundred people became victims of the disaster caused by heavy rains, and almost 140,000 were injured. In addition, more than 15,000 residential buildings were destroyed.
