Central African Republic to Cooperate With Russia in Defense, Security, Says Minister

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On July 30, the UN Security Council lifted the embargo imposed in 2013 after the start of the country's civil war. Arms sales to armed groups operating in the country remain prohibited.

The Central African Republic (CAR) will cooperate with Russia in the field of defense and security following the UN Security Council's decision to lift the arms embargo on the country, CAR Communications and Mass Media Minister Maxime Balalu told Sputnik.

"Now we have the opportunity to work with Russia and other countries in this field to strengthen our defense and security forces," Balalu said in an interview.

CAR will work toward achieving the best conditions for the army's re-equipment and will provide it with "decent means to finally put an end to some pockets of resistance," the minister added.
On July 30, the UN Security Council members unanimously lifted the arms embargo that had been imposed on CAR since 2013, when a civil war broke out between the government and various armed rebel groups.
In addition to Russia, the countries that sought the lifting of the CAR arms embargo included China, Gabon, Ghana, and Kenya.
