Algeria strongly condemns the assassination of Palestinian Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, a treacherous and shameful move by Israel, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf said at a press conference in the Algerian capital on Wednesday.
"We strongly condemn the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement, in Tehran. This treacherous and shameful move by the Zionist entity [Israel] is a tragic turn of events," Minister Attaf said.
On Wednesday, the Palestinian Hamas movement announced the death of Haniyeh in an Israeli strike on his residence in Tehran, where he had arrived to attend the inauguration of Iran's new president.
The movement blamed Israel and the US for Haniyeh's death and said the attack would not go unanswered.
Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said he had nothing to say about the Palestinian politician's death or Israel's involvement.
Israeli army officials, in turn, said they "would not respond to media reports" about Haniyeh's assassination. The Jerusalem Post wrote that Israeli authorities have instructed ministers not to comment on the assassination of the Hamas leader.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov called Haniyeh's killing an absolutely unacceptable political assassination that threatens further escalation in the region.
