On Wednesday, the bodies of Ebrahim Raisi, Hossein Amirabdollahian, and other officials were transported to the country's capital, Tehran, from the city of Tabriz. On Thursday, the country paid the last tribute to eight departed members of its leadership.
Many world leaders offered their condolences for their deaths. Among them were African leaders, including presidents of Burkina Faso, Senegal, Eritrea, Morocco, and others. The President of the African Union’s Commission, Moussa Faki, also conveyed his "sincere condolences" and "deep sympathy."
Russian President Vladimir Putin also expressed condolences over the death of Raisi and called him a "true friend" of Russia.
The helicopter carrying Iranian officials was returning from a visit to Azerbaijan, where Raisi and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev participated in the opening ceremony for the Giz Galasi hydroelectric complex and the commissioning of the Khoda Afarin hydroelectric complex on the joint border. Iranian authorities said the accident took place in a remote mountainous region due to poor weather conditions and thick fog.
