South African President Cyril Ramaphosa urges the international community, along with the allies of Israel, not to ignore the persisting persecution of Palestinians, according to the statement of the country's presidency.
"The gross human rights violations perpetuated by Israel have scaled to incomprehensible levels of cruelty, hate and extreme violent oppression. The world must do more to end the persecution of Palestinians, including that of many innocent women and children," the president added.
South Africa strongly believes that a permanent ceasefire in Gaza is vital for the successful implementation of the court's provisional measures, the presidency noted.
On May 10, Pretoria called on the ICJ to consider "the changed circumstances and new facts" and order further provisional measures against Israel. This came after Israel started Monday a military operation in the eastern parts of Rafah and took control of the Gaza side of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
In January, the ICJ ruled provisional measures in the South African case against Israel, filed in late December 2023. The ruling ordered Israel to take steps to prevent acts of genocide and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. However, the ICJ's decision did not include an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
South Africa asked the Court for further provisional measures against Israel over the severe hunger in the besieged Gaza Strip.
