Russian and US military personnel are stationed in the African country on one base (Airbase 101), a source in Niger's security services told Sputnik.
The Americans, according to the source, have declared heightened combat readiness because of the neighborhood with the Russians.
According to Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder, the US and Russian military are stationed far from each other at a military base in Niger, there are no interactions between them.
In March, Niger decided to withdraw from a military agreement with Washington, which had allowed the latter to set up a drone base in the northern region of the country. Following the termination of the military agreement, Washington and Niamey began discussions on the "orderly withdrawal" of US troops from Niger after the country's transitional government.
Along with Niger, Chad also demanded the US forces to leave from its soil. On May 1, a US defense official said that the US has relocated 60 of its military personnel from Chad to Germany amid an ongoing review of security cooperation between the countries.
The removal of US forces from Niger and Chad, as well as similar movements across Africa, indicate that the era of US-led neocolonialism, aimed at exploiting the continent's people and resources after World War II, is coming to an end, veteran Defense Department analyst Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski told Sputnik.
