May 6 is the day of the first round of Chad's presidential elections. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a second round will be held.
A total of 10 candidates are running for the top job in the first round, including General Mahamat Idriss Déby, the country's President of the Transition, and Succès Masra, Chad's Head of Government and former opposition leader, as well as Albert Pahimi Padacké, the nation's former Prime Minister, and Lydie Beassemda, the only female candidate.
More than 8.2 million registered voters are expected to go to the polls between 5:00 am (GMT) and 4:00 pm (GMT).
The transition period began after the death on the battlefield in April 2021 of the then President of Chad, Idriss Déby Itno. The army, led by his son Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, took power.
In October 2022, the transition period was extended until 2024 and he was appointed interim president.
