Kenyan Forces Reportedly Eliminate Six Al-Shabaab Members During Counter-Terrorism Operation

Since the mid-2000s, al-Shabaab*, a military group with close ties to al-Qaeda*, has waged a violent insurgency against the Somali government and remains active in neighboring Ethiopia and Kenya.

Kenyan security forces have neutralized six members of the al-Shabaab terrorist group, local media said on Wednesday, citing officials.
It reportedly happened during a joint multi-agency operation in the vast Boni Forest region on the Kenyan coast.
Among those killed was a foreigner, whose identity has not yet been revealed.
The reason for al-Shabaab's attacks on Kenya stems from Kenya's decision to send soldiers to Somalia in October 2011 in response to a series of abductions and security risks in the border area.

The most lethal assault carried out by al-Shabaab militants on Kenyan territory took place at Garissa University College on April 2, 2015. During the attack, armed people stormed the campus, killing more than 140 students and causing numerous injuries.
