Senegal's newly elected President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, will travel to neighboring Mauritania on Wednesday for his first foreign visit, according to local media.
The Senegalese leader is expected to meet with his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, in the capital, Nouakchott.
Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, president of Mauritania and current chairman of the African Union, attended the swearing-in ceremony of President Faye in Senegal on April 2.
Former Senegalese President Macky Sall's first foreign visit after taking power in 2012 was to neighboring The Gambia.
The presidential election in Senegal took place on March 24, although it had been scheduled for February 25 but was postponed by the country's former leader, Sall.
Faye won the presidential race with 54.28% of the vote, defeating former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, who received 35.79% of the vote.
The newly elected president said that the government's priorities will include youth employment, lowering the cost of living, and protecting human rights. Faye also announced audits of the oil, gas, and mining sectors of the economy and urged investors to contribute to the country's development.
