Chinese peacekeepers leave the Democratic Republic of the Congo after nearly 21 years.
The ceremony marking the end of their mission in DR Congo's South Kivu province was held on April 9. The Chinese contingent was awarded the United Nations Medal.
Bintu Keita, head of the UN mission in DR Congo, praised the "dedication" and "professionalism" of the Chinese peacekeepers. She thanked the Chinese government for sending contingents of engineers and medical personnel to South Kivu since 2003.
Last year, the DRC authorities demanded the withdrawal of the MONUSCO, which was deployed in the eastern part of the country since 2010, as it considered the mission ineffective in stabilizing the region. In late February, the withdrawal of the mission began.
