Russia is seeking to have a port facility in Sudan and that goes against US global campaign plans and is a concern for Washington, African Command (AFRICOM) Commander Gen. Michael Langley said in congressional testimony on Thursday.
"I'm talking about the Russian Federation. They would love a warm water port. They'd love to have the port. They are in Sudan as their own. That's against our global campaign plans. I can talk with a higher level of specificity in closed session, but that is a concern," Langley told a House Armed Services Committee hearing.
In April 2023, clashes broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group.
The parties to the conflict have since introduced several temporary nationwide ceasefires, but none has helped settle the conflict. In late October, the parties to the conflict resumed negotiations, mediated by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, but the hostilities have continued.
