The US military killed three extremists from the al-Shabaab terrorist group during an airstrike in Somalia, US Africa Command said on Tuesday.
“The initial post-strike assessment indicates that the US airstrike killed three al-Shabaab terrorists and that no civilians were harmed,” the statement said.
The airstrike was conducted as a collective self-defense at the request of the federal government of Somalia and occurred on March 10 approximately 70 kilometers southwest of the nation’s capital, Mogadishu, according to the statement.
The Somalia-based radical Islamist group al-Shabaab, which has close ties to the international terrorist organization al-Qaeda*, has been waging an armed insurgency against the central government of Somalia since the mid-2000s.
