Libya has expressed its readiness to cooperate in the opening of a Russian Consulate General in the city of Benghazi, according to the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Libyan Government of National Unity (GNU), Taher al-Baour.
"There are no political obstacles to the opening of the consulate, there are procedural and administrative obstacles. We are ready to cooperate on this issue," al-Baour told Sputnik.
Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Libya Aydar Aganin told Sputnik that the opening of the Russian Consulate General in Benghazi had been postponed and that the Russian embassy in Libya was working to convince the authorities in Tripoli of its importance.
"Libya and Russia have historical and long-standing relations. For the most part, they are stable. We in the government in Tripoli do not have any objections or reservations about cooperation with Russia," al-Baour stressed.
The acting foreign minister of Libya's GNU emphasized that Russia is among the important countries and has historically played a role in the Middle East and North Africa.
"We have always counted on Russia, on the fact that there will be a balance or a state that creates a balance in the region," he noted.
