Earlier in the day, media reported that loud gunfire was heard in the capital of Chad, the city of N'Djamena. Government forces stormed the headquarters of the opposition party. A group of soldiers was heading to the presidential palace in N'Djamena and was trying to take control of it.
"The government has declared a curfew in N'Djamena in order to protect the population," Mahamoud said, adding that the situation in Chad is not a coup, and everything is currently under control.
Opposition Party Leader, Cousin of Chadian Transitional President Dead
The leader of the Chadian opposition Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF) and cousin of the country's transitional president, Yaya Dillo, is dead, the ChadOne news agency reported on Wednesday.
The government has pronounced Yaya Dillo dead, the broadcaster said.
