Thirteen members of the UN Security Council voted in favor, with the United Kingdom abstaining.
The draft resolution demanded "an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that must be respected by all parties."
The document also urged that "all parties to the conflict comply with their obligations under international law," in particular toward all civilians and hostages. It also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
In addition, it reiterated the call for "the full, rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access into and throughout the entire Gaza Strip."
The US mission to the UN said on Monday it did not think the draft resolution was "an effective mechanism."
