Special gel compositions preventing the development of caries have been developed and patented by scientists at Omsk State Medical University (OmSMU). Clinical trials of the development proved its effectiveness not only in the fight against caries, but also against enamel hypersensitivity, as well as the negative consequences of teeth whitening, reported the university.
OmSMU scientists, who have been dealing with dental prophylaxis for more than 40 years, have created a whole line of gel compositions aimed at preventing the onset of this disease and stopping initial caries (caries in the staining stage). Currently, the line has 10 compositions, in the near future the scientists will patent the 11th dental medicine, the university said.
According to Galina Skripkina, the Head of the Department of Children's Dentistry of the Omsk State Medical University Faculty of Dentistry, these are not ordinary toothpastes, but therapeutic compositions for a course of treatment, which is prescribed depending on the clinical situation in the oral cavity of the patient and his age.
"In the developed preventive products we managed to combine the incompatible: a three-component gel with fluoride, calcium and phosphorus for home use and for professional work in the dentist's chair," she added.
She also explained that it takes 2 to 3 weeks to apply the treatment to the patient and this is done twice a year.
"This is enough to maintain an optimal level of mineral metabolism in the oral cavity for six months," the scientist said, explaining that all mineral components in saliva are embedded in the crystal structure of enamel under favorable conditions, and metabolic processes take place in an optimal mode.
According to her, it is the prolonged effect of the developed gels that distinguishes them from the preventive preparations of other manufacturers.
"The products available on the market require constant use, as their effect lasts only two weeks. Against this background, our product is almost six times more effective," emphasizes the head of the department.
In addition, the Omsk scientists assure that the gels have not only preventive, but also therapeutic effect.
The university emphasized that the effectiveness of the drugs has been proven in laboratory and clinical trials.
"They eliminate caries at the stage of focal demineralization of tooth enamel (initial carious process), relieve the symptoms of hypersensitivity of tooth enamel to chemical, mechanical and thermal influences (hyperesthesia) and restore the gloss of tooth enamel after whitening."
In the future, the scientific team plans to add preservatives to the developed products to make them more convenient for home use, as they currently need to be stored in special refrigerators.
