Beijing appreciates Russia's position on the recent elections in Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Monday.
In light of the elections that took place in Taiwan last week, Moscow urged "external forces" to refrain from any provocations that could undermine stability and international security in the Taiwan Strait, adding that Russia continues to consider the island a part of China and opposes its independence in any form.
"We highly appreciate the position of Russia," Mao told reporters, commenting on Moscow's statement.
According to the Taiwanese Central Election Commission, Lai Ching-te from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) gained 40.05% of the vote at the Saturday elections for the island's head of administration.
Following the elections, spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office Chen Binhua highlighted that China will firmly oppose any actions aimed at promoting Taiwan's independence and interference by external forces in the country's internal affairs.
