Chad's Interim President, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, was nominated as the candidate for the presidential election of the country's ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement (PSM) party, media reported.
The transition leader has not yet accepted or rejected the offer to become the party's candidate, the outlet noted. The dates for the presidential elections in Chad have not yet been set, but the elections are reportedly planned to be held before October this year, when the transition period in the country ends.
In April 2021, Chad's long-serving president, Idriss Deby, died from injuries sustained in fighting rebels in the north of the country. Chad's military then announced the dissolution of parliament and the government and the formation of a 15-member transitional military council to govern the country.
They added that the transitional period would last a year and a half, after which elections would be held. The council was headed by 37-year-old General Deby, the son of the late president. On October 8, 2022, the military council was dissolved and Deby was declared interim president of Chad.
