Russia Set to Assume Chairmanship of BRICS & CIS

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia assumes the chairmanship of the BRICS group of leading developing countries and takes over the baton from Kyrgyzstan as chair of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on Monday.

Russia is expected to hold more than 200 events as BRICS chair. Its motto will be "Strengthening Multilateralism for equitable global development and security." Full BRICS membership of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia takes effect on Monday. Argentina was also supposed to join the club but said on Friday that it had formally rejected the invitation.
Along with that, Moscow is expected to continue its efforts to pair integration processes in the CIS space. Priority will be given to the development of relations between the CIS and international organizations. Russia will also focus on improving mechanisms to counter security threats. The presentation of Russia's chairmanship priorities will take place at the CIS headquarters in Minsk on January 23.
