In late November, fighting has intensified in Sudan's Darfur region despite the parties previously announcing their readiness to negotiate. However, there is now hope for a ceasefire.
"The Assembly... welcomed and appreciated H.E. General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan... for his unequivocal assurances of his commitment to an unconditional ceasefire and resolution of the conflict through political dialogue and his agreement to the proposal by the Assembly for him to have a one-to-one meeting with the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) with the facilitation of IGAD... [the Assembly welcomes Dagalo’s] acceptance of the proposals of the Assembly for an unconditional ceasefire, resolution of the conflict through political dialogue and the holding of a one-to-one meeting [with Burhan]," the IGAD said in a statement.
In April, violent clashes broke out between the Sudanese army and the RSF. The parties to the conflict have since introduced a number of temporary nationwide ceasefires, but none has helped settle the conflict.
In late October, the parties resumed negotiations, mediated by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, but the hostilities in the country continue. Fighting has recently intensified in the Darfur region despite the Jeddah talks and announcements by the parties that they are ready to negotiate, a UN official said.
