The Pallada freighter set sail from the Ukrainian port of Odesa on November 3, according to data published by the MarineTraffic ship tracker. It ran aground off the northern Turkish port of Eregli at 10 a.m. [07:00 GMT] on Sunday.

"All 13 crew members were successfully evacuated from the ship. After the evacuation ended, the ship broke in half due to bad weather conditions," the Turkish Transport Ministry's Directorate-General of Maritime Affairs said.

Another general cargo ship, Turkish-flagged Kafkametler, set out a distress signal as it was drifting toward a breakwater at Eregli, the Turkish maritime authority said, adding a rescue operation was underway. There are estimated to be 12 crew aboard the ship.
