The Al-Ahly hospital in Gaza was hit by a missile on October 17. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that at least 471 people were killed, most of them were women and children, making the attack the deadliest one since the beginning of the latest escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. According to the Al-Arabiya media, the death toll from the strike exceeded 800.
The warring parties blamed each other: Hamas said the attack was carried out by Israeli planes, and the Israel Defense Forces said a rocket launched unsuccessfully by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group hit the hospital.
The attack on the hospital has been condemned by several countries and organizations around the world; manifestants have gathered in Tunisia, Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank and Turkey to protest the attack.
