The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is prepared for the situation when violence spreads to other areas, including to the West Bank or Israel's northern border with Lebanon, IDF spokesman Richard Hecht said on Sunday.
"It’s early days, we’re at the beginning, the beginning of this. It’s hard to say. I mean, we're ready for the convergence of arenas. That’s something we're ready for," Hecht said in an interview with CNN.
He added that the IDF would strike "severely inside the Gaza Strip" in response to the Hamas’ actions.
Israel was hit by an unprecedented rocket attack from Gaza on Saturday morning. The Israeli army said Hamas had fired more than 3,000 rockets, adding that dozens of Hamas troops had infiltrated border areas in southern Israel. The Israeli military has since sent troops into the southern territories to retake them from Palestinian forces and has begun carrying out airstrikes on Hamas' positions in Gaza.
