Algerian government reinforced its health measures at its borders in order to prevent the spread of bedbugs from France, media reported.
According to the country's health ministry, the measures include "health monitoring and disinfecting of aircraft, ships, and vehicles at entry points".
The authorities decided to take action on the grounds that the insect could come into the North African state due to a large flow of individuals, travelling from France, the media noted. However, the ministry reassured that no bedbug infestations had been reported yet.
Along with Algeria, Morocco has also declared steps to limit the risk of bedbug spreading into the state, the outlet said.
The growth of bedbug sightings in France raised concerns and questions about public health in the lead-up to the 2024 Olympics. Jean-Michel Berenger, a leading entomologist in France, stressed that the increase could be connected to summer travel, with people accidentally bringing back bedbugs in their luggage.
