Libyan National Army Commander Visits Russia

TUNIS (Sputnik) – In August, a Russian delegation headed by Deputy Defense Minister Col. Gen. Yunus-Bek Yevkurov visited Libya at the invitation of Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Khalifa Haftar.

Libyan National Army Commander Khalifa Haftar visited Russia on Tuesday, where he held talks at the Russian Defense Ministry, the LNA said in a statement.
According to the statement, Haftar’s visit took place at the invitation of the Russian side. The deputy defense minister of Russia, Col. Gen. Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, greeted Haftar.

"During the visit, negotiations were held with Russian high-ranking officials on the development of the situation in Libya, bilateral relations between the two countries, and ways to strengthen and develop them were discussed," the LNA said.

Russia and Libya are developing their partnership in different fields. During the Russia–Africa Summit, which took place on 27-28 July in St. Petersburg and was attended by a Libyan delegation, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed the importance of achieving true national unity in Libya, so that the country does not turn into a zone of confrontation between third states.
On September 10, a Mediterranean storm with hurricane characteristics caused torrential rains in Libya, with floods killing thousands of people. Six days after, specialists from Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) arrived in Libya to provide to help in the search and rescue operations in the flood-affected Libyan city of Derna.
