Sudanese Education Minister Mahmoud Al-Huri said that UNICEF has pledged to support the plan to resume the educational process in Sudan in accordance with its priority needs, which are estimated at about $150 million.
About 40% of the educational institutions in Khartoum were destroyed in the course of the battles, Al-Huri said, adding that the Sudanese Education Ministry has developed a plan that will allow students from clash-affected areas to continue their studies in other regions when the school year begins in October.
"So far, no assistance has arrived specifically for the education sector in Sudan, as most aid is earmarked for other sectors, mainly health," the minister noted.
The League of Arab States (LAS) has also promised to provide assistance to Sudanese educational institutions, he added.
The rival militaries RSF have been fighting for control of the North African country since mid-April, with over 3.7 million people internally displaced and more than 800,000 Sudanese refugees seeking safety and protection across the border, according to UN figures. According to the Sudanese Health Ministry, the death toll from the clashes has risen to 600. At the end of July, opponents broke off talks that had been underway in Jeddah since May.
