Tanzania Plans Introduction of Cable Transport in Six Regions to Boost Tourism

Cable transport involves the use of engineless vehicles propelled by a steel cable, commonly known as a cableway. It includes cable cars and can transport passengers and goods. The cables can be actively or passively driven, and the movement of objects can be achieved by pulling, sliding, sailing, or driving within the object being transported.

Tanzania is considering the introduction of cable transport in six regions as part of efforts to boost tourism and improve transportation in the country, according to The East African.
According to Habibu, the director general of the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA), a feasibility study has already been conducted to identify potential areas for the installation of cable transport systems.
"After conducting a study, we identified Mbeya, Iringa, Tanga, Morogoro, Arusha and Kilimanjaro as having a great opportunity to introduce cable transport," Suluo said.

The official added that the study's findings have been submitted to the country's Ministry of Works and Transport for further action. Communication is also expected to take place with Tanzanian diplomats in China, Brazil and South Africa to facilitate knowledge sharing and learning from experts in those countries.
This initiative is in line with a directive issued in June by the Minister of Works and Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, who urged Latra to actively promote cable transport as an attractive investment opportunity.

"Investors are already interested to invest in the sector. You need to be active on issues that require you to work on," the minister said at the time.

Suluo revealed that one person in Mtoo Wa Mbu is already providing informal cable services to tourists, indicating the business potential in tourist areas. However, LATRA aims to engage potential stakeholders and establish regulations to ensure the successful implementation of cable transport.
