Gabonese Military Officers Announce Arrest of Members of President's Entourage

In power for 14 years, Ali Bongo Ondimba has been announced winner of the 2023 presidential elections with 64.27% of the votes cast. Later on Wednesday, a group of a Gabonese military announced the cancellation of the elections' results and the dissolution of "all the institutions of the Republic".

People close to Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba, including his son and adviser, have been arrested on suspicion of treason and other crimes in the wake of the military coup, its leaders said on Wednesday.
"Persons whose names follow are arrested, in particular, for treason against state institutions of power, large-scale embezzlement of state funds, international financial embezzlement within a criminal group, forgery of the president's signature, active corruption and drug trafficking," the military said on the Gabon24 TV channel.
The listed names include the president's son, his chief of staff, the president's adviser and one of the president's representatives.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bongo was reelected as the country's head for a third term after securing 64.2% of the vote. Following the election body's announcement, the Gabonese military delivered a televised address, declaring that the election results were canceled and all institutions were dissolved, AFP reported.
The African Union has condemned the coup attempt in Gabon, calling for the ensuring of the physical integrity of the president.
