Earlier this week, US Ambassador to Sudan John Godfrey, marking his first year in Khartoum, wrote on his social media account that the country's warring factions are incapable of governing the nation and urged them to transfer power to a civilian authority.

Sudan's Foreign Ministry has condemned comments by the US Ambassador that neither side in the current conflict is "fit to govern," calling on the envoy to revise his position on the situation in the country.
On Friday, the US ambassador urged the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end their "devastating" conflict and transfer power to a civilian government, noting that only when civilian security is restored can "a future be built by the Sudanese people."

"The belligerents, who have demonstrated they are not fit to govern, must end the conflict and transfer power to a civilian transitional government," Godfrey said in a statement.

In response to this statement, the Sudanese ministry called on Godfrey to retract his "inappropriate comments" that don't conform to international diplomatic norms and rules of interaction between countries based on mutual respect for each other's sovereignty.
It was emphasized that his remarks "contradict the requirements of diplomatic courtesy and professionalism and mutual respect of sovereignty."

"The comments reflect the US ambassador's lack of respect for the Sudanese people and their independence," the ministry said, adding: "The comments ignored the fact that the armed forces, the National Army of Sudan, are defending the country and its people against a terrorist and criminal militia."

The ministry pointed out that irrational external interference in the country's affairs and attempts "to impose political prescriptions" that failed to achieve national consensus were among the reasons for the outbreak and continuation of the conflict in Sudan.
Therefore, Sudan urged the envoy and the US government in general to revise their "unbalanced position" on the current conflict in the country. It was stressed that the US diplomat should refrain from making statements that contradict diplomatic norms and don't contribute to the resolution of the conflict.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry added that it is particularly important at a time "when the two countries are working to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation in all fields.

"We expect the US ambassador and his country's government to correct this unbalanced and defective position, and for the envoy to distance himself from comments that contradict diplomatic norms and rules and do not help to end the crisis in our country," read the statement.

Since mid-April, Sudan has been gripped by clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group. Despite several temporary ceasefires by both sides, the fighting continues.
