The ruling Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the congress endorsed the incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi's candidacy for the 2023 presidential election, local media reported.
The party also reportedly voted for Tshisekedi to lead it for the next five years.
The presidential election is scheduled for December 20, according to the country’s electoral commission.
There will be parallel legislative elections, for which the UDPS has nominated 495 candidates for 500 seats, and provincial legislative elections, where the party is fielding candidates in all constituencies.
Felix Tshisekedi was elected leader of the UDPS at the end of March 2018 following the death of his father and party founder Etienne Tshisekedi.
On the same day, he was chosen as the UDPS's presidential candidate for the general election scheduled for December 2018. He won the race with 38.57% of the votes.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the president is elected by the people by simple majority vote.
The constitution of the former Belgian colony, which gained independence in 1960, sets a limit of two five-year terms for the presidency.
