BRICS Expansion Shows Policy of Unilateralism on Decline: Iranian President

BRICS, a group is seen as a counterweight to Western economic domination, derives its name from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The South African city of Johannesburg is hosting the the 15th BRICS Summit, which is being held in an expanded format with countries interested in joining the bloc invited.

The expansion of BRICS shows that the policy of unilateralism is on the decline, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Thursday.
Following the Johannesburg summit earlier in the day, the BRICS leaders decided to invite the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Argentina and Egypt to join the group with full membership from January 1, 2024.

"BRICS expansion shows that unilateralism is on the decline," Raisi said at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

The 15th BRICS Summit, held in Johannesburg from August 22, is closing its doors on Thursday. South Africa, the bloc's 2023 chair, invited delegations from dozens of other countries and international organizations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and African Union chief Moussa Faki Mahamat.
