The suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has been re-arrested after being granted bail.
Emefiele was arraigned in a court in Lagos on a charge of illegal possession of firearms and live ammunition, the local media revealed, at which he reportedly pleaded not guilty and was released on bail by the presiding judge.
However, outside the courthouse, the DSS clashed with prison officials who were preparing to take the banker into custody until his bail was resolved. The secret police proved stronger and managed to re-arrest Emefiele.
Nigeria's security services first detained Emefiele in June as part of an investigation into his office activities.
This was preceded by a decision by Nigeria's new president, Bola Tinubu, to remove the Central Bank governor from office amid planned reforms in the financial sector.
Tinubu, who came to power in late May after tight February presidential elections, slammed Emefiele for introducing new money bills reform that led to a critical shortage of cash to pay for daily necessities.
However, the motion was dismissed by the high court, which argued that the service had failed to present any specific evidence.
Emefiele assumed office as governor of the Central Bank in June 2014. In May 2019, he was reappointed for a second term that was supposed to end next June.
