At least one civilian was killed in the crossfire between pro-government armed forces and the M23 rebels in the Katana town of the DRC's South Kivu province, Congolese news portal Actualite said.
A pro-government group of armed forces dubbed Wazalendo recaptured the Katana town in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) South Kivu province from the M23 rebels on Tuesday, local media reported.
The clashes between Wazalendo and the M23 rebels in Katana, which is located about 40 kilometers north of the South Kivu provincial capital Bukavu, reportedly sparked panic in nearby Kabamba and Kavumu settlements, forcing shops and schools to close.
Katana had reportedly been under M23 control since February 14.
Meanwhile, the eastern DRC's Ituri province currently faces a dire humanitarian situation amid continued violence and lack of aid, charity organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned in a report on Tuesday.

"Only a small proportion of people can access healthcare in Ituri, where health facilities also fall prey to attacks. In Djugu territory, the Fataki general hospital was obliged to suspend its activities and evacuate patients in mid-March following armed group threats," the MSF pointed out, calling on all state and non-state armed groups in Ituri to spare civilians and healthcare facilities.

Despite efforts by the DRC's Ministry of Health and aid organizations, resources fall far short in meeting the population's needs, the MSF noted.
"Food insecurity worsened sharply in Ituri in 2024 and is now chronic for 43% of people. Poor hygiene conditions and dilapidated shelters in displacement camps mean that diarrhea and respiratory diseases spread easily, affecting children under five the most," the report read.
Moreover, violence in Ituri has displaced around 100,000 people since the beginning of 2025, according to the UN.
