The companies, whose Chinese executives were expelled from Niger, allegedly failed to implement fair pay scales for local workers, respect quotas for local suppliers in contracts, prioritize local goods and services, and provide training, promotion opportunities, and technology transfer to enhance the skills of Nigerien staff, local media noted.
The Nigerien government expelled Chinese managers of China National Petroleum Corporation, Zinder Refining Company, and the West African Gas
Pipeline Company, citing the companies' failure to comply with a 2024 amendment to the mining code, which prioritizes the state's benefit from national resources, local media reported.
"We simply ask the companies to pick a Nigerien subcontractor when possible, and that a majority of the subcontractors shouldn't be Chinese," Ibrahim Hamidou, head of communications for the Nigerien prime minister, reportedly said.
Meanwhile, the
government of Niger has revoked the operating license of the Soluxe Hotel Niamey, managed by a Chinese company, for alleged discriminatory practices, unauthorized construction, and falsified tourism tax data, reports noted.
