France Begins Troop Withdrawal From Senegal, Handing Over Military Bases

The withdrawal of French troops from Senegal follows France's recent troop withdrawals from several other West African nations, including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, and Cote d'Ivoire.
France has begun the phased
handover of military bases in Senegal to Senegalese control, marking a significant shift in the long-standing military relationship between the two countries.
The French embassy in Dakar confirmed the transfer of facilities and housing in the Marechal and Saint-Exupery districts, with further handovers scheduled according to a jointly agreed timeline.
The withdrawal is a direct result of a
joint commission established on February 12, with its first meeting held on February 28. This commission aims to overhaul the bilateral defense and security partnership between France and Senegal.
"The commission also launched work to overhaul the bilateral defence and security partnership," the commission said in a statement in late February.
While Senegal gained independence from France in 1960, maintaining close ties, the newly elected government under President
Bassirou Diomaye Faye has pledged to treat France as an equal partner and has demanded the removal of all foreign troops by the end of 2025, citing Senegal's sovereignty.
