Canadian miner Barrick Gold has reached a new agreement with the Malian government, under which Barrick will pay 275 billion CFA francs (about $438 million) to the West African country, a Western media outlet reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. In exchange, the company seeks the release of four employees detained in September, the return of three tonnes of gold, evacuated by the Malian authorities in January, and the resumption of operations at the Loulo-Gounkoto mining complex in western Mali, according to the report.A delegation from the Malian government and a private consulting firm completed a three-day inspection of Barrick's facilities at Loulo-Gounkoto on Wednesday, while the authorities last week gave the company a one-week deadline to resume operations, the report added.Previous reports said that the Malian government was demanding a one-time settlement of 125 billion CFA francs (about $197.7 million) and compliance with a new mining code introduced in 2023 to resolve the dispute with the Canadian miner over tax debts.

Canadian miner Barrick Gold signed the agreement to resolve a nearly two-year dispute over tax debts, however, the deal has yet to receive formal approval from the Malian government, a Western media outlet said.
Canadian miner Barrick Gold has reached a new agreement with the
Malian government, under which Barrick will pay 275 billion CFA francs (about $438 million) to the West African country, a Western media outlet reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
In exchange, the company seeks the release of four employees detained in September, the return of three tonnes of gold, evacuated by the Malian authorities in January, and the resumption of operations at the Loulo-Gounkoto mining complex in western Mali, according to the report.
A delegation from the Malian government and a private consulting firm completed a three-day inspection of Barrick's facilities at Loulo-Gounkoto on Wednesday, while the authorities last week gave the company a one-week deadline to resume operations, the report added.
Previous reports said that the Malian government was demanding a one-time settlement of 125 billion CFA francs (about $197.7 million) and compliance with a new mining code introduced in 2023 to resolve
the dispute with the Canadian miner over tax debts.
