The AU Summit, themed "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations," calls on the African nations "to heal the scars of historical injustice and overcome lingering trauma that has long hindered the continent's progress," the Ethiopian prime minister noted.
African countries demand an end to systematic resource exploitation, Ethiopian Prime Minister
Abiy Ahmed said at the 38th AU Summit held in Addis Ababa.
"It [the AU summit] demands an end to the systematic exploitation of our wealth, resources, and opportunities," Abiy Ahmed stated at the opening ceremony of the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU.
Reparations are not about charity but justice, aiming to restore dignity, combat poverty, inequality, and discrimination, and end resource exploitation, he emphasized.
"The demand for reparations is not about charity or financial aid; it is a call for justice. It [the AU summit] seeks to restore the dignity of millions and heal the deepest scars of poverty, inequality, and discrimination. [...] It also calls for a transformative process that acknowledges past harms and takes bold steps to right the wrongs inflicted upon us and upon society across the continent," Abiy Ahmed added.
