Lavrov Says Surprised by World's Reaction to Putin-Trump Talks
13:07 13.02.2025 (Updated: 17:42 13.02.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Lavrov also expressed the hope that the phone conversation between the leaders will be a wake-up call for the West, which had forgotten how to conduct dialogue.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that he was surprised by the world's reaction to the phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, adding that they consider it something out of the ordinary.
"What struck me was that the whole world has now a kind of brain freeze and is considering the telephone conversation that took place and the report about this telephone conversation as something out of the ordinary," Lavrov told reporters, adding that it was a normal conversation of two polite people.
European countries "have abandoned dialogue and diplomacy as a method of communication with the outside world and have switched to the language of threats," sanctions pressure, and arming of Kiev, the minister added.
"Judging by the surprise and brain freeze that the telephone conversation between Trump and Putin caused, it seems that the West has begun to take for granted everything that is happening in Ukraine, everything that [Ukraine's Volodymyr] Zelensky's Nazi regime is doing," he said.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that
mutual invitations from Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump to visit the US and Russia and plans to hold a separate bilateral meeting are different processes.
"Exchanging mutual invitations is one thing, but focusing on a separate bilateral meeting is something else, different, so to speak, processes," Peskov told journalists when asked whether Putin's invitation to Trump in Moscow means the possibility of the US leader coming to celebrate Victory Day.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The leaders agreed to continue personal contacts, including arranging a personal meeting.
