France and Senegal have created a commission for coordinating the withdrawal of French troops from the African country, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, the French Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday. In late December, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye confirmed the country's intention to get rid of foreign military presence as early as 2025. Later, the nation's prime minister declared that the government is dismantling "all foreign military bases," namely France, the former colonial power of the West African country. In 2022, the French military, which had been present in Africa's Sahel region since 2014 as part of the anti-terrorism Operation Barkhane, was forced to leave Mali. In 2023, France also withdrew its troops from Burkina Faso and Niger at the request of the countries' authorities. In late November 2024, the Chadian Foreign Ministry announced the termination of defense cooperation with France. The first contingent of 120 French soldiers left Chad in late December 2024.

France to Withdraw Troops From Senegal by End of 2025, Foreign Ministry Says
08:29 13.02.2025 (Updated: 15:05 13.02.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Earlier in February, France reportedly began pulling its forces out of three military bases in Senegal, "Marechal," "Saint-Exupery," and "Contre-amiral Protet," which were placed under Senegalese control.
France and Senegal have created a commission for coordinating the withdrawal of French troops from the African country, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, the French Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
"Senegal and France have decided to set up a joint commission to make arrangements for the withdrawal of French troops from Senegal and the return of premises by the end of 2025. Both countries intend to work on a new partnership in defense and security that takes into account the strategic priorities of all parties," the ministry said.
In late December, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye confirmed the country's intention
to get rid of foreign military presence as early as 2025.
