The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights found Tanzania accountable for failing to prevent violence, discrimination, and systemic neglect of persons with albinism, including violations of their rights to life, dignity, non-discrimination, health, education, and protection for children with albinism.
Tanzania must finalize, promulgate, and enforce a national action plan to protect the rights of persons with albinism (PWAs) to combat attacks and human rights violations against this vulnerable group, the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights
ruled on Wednesday, following a case filed by human rights organizations.
Other key rulings include the establishment of a compensation fund for victims, amendments to laws to criminalize attacks on PWAs, reforms to the Witchcraft Act, improvements to shelters, and nationwide awareness campaigns to combat harmful myths.
