After months of escalating tensions over Ethiopia's maritime access deal with Somalia's breakaway region of Somaliland, Mogadishu and Addis Ababa agreed at talks in Turkey on December 11 to resolve their differences through technical negotiations to begin by the end of February.
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has praised the recent agreement between
Ethiopia and Somalia, emphasizing its importance in bolstering regional cooperation in East Africa.
Referencing the Ankara agreement as a catalyst for this enhanced cooperation, Abebe Muluneh, Head of IGAD's Peace and Security Division, noted in an interview with Ethiopian media the subsequent exchange of visits by senior leaders from both nations, solidifying their commitment to bilateral cooperation.
He highlighted the
agreement's potential to positively impact both economic and political ties among countries in the Horn of Africa.
Muluneh further explained that the agreement paves the way for enhanced economic and political collaboration, primarily facilitated by peaceful
dialogue. The restoration of diplomatic relations and ongoing discussions have been instrumental in resolving past differences between the two countries, he added.
Emphasizing the crucial role of peace in regional development, Muluneh stressed the importance of building mutual relations based on trust, mutual benefit, and a shared commitment to internal stability.
The IGAD official further called upon regional nations to
prioritize internal matters and resist external interference, recognizing that this approach contributes to regional harmony.
