Ethiopia and Somalia have been experiencing tensions since January, when Ethiopia made an agreement with Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of Somalia, to utilize the Red Sea port of Berbera in return for acknowledging Somaliland's independence.
During a phone call with his French counterpart on Saturday, the Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah El-Sisi highlighted the critical connection between the Horn of Africa’s stability and Egypt’s national security, reaffirming Egypt's commitment to
supporting Somalia, the Egyptian presidency said.
Through bilateral cooperation and participation in the African Union
peacekeeping mission, Egypt aims to promote peace and security in the region.
The president also welcomed the recent Ethiopia-Somalia agreement brokered by Turkey, expressing hope that it will pave the way for lasting stability in line with international law.
Turkey has been actively mediating to ease tensions between
Somalia and Ethiopia, and these efforts have borne fruit. On December 12, the countries signed the Ankara Declaration, marking a significant shift in the relations between the neighboring nations in the Horn of Africa. The new agreement acknowledged Ethiopia’s need for reliable and secure sea access, while affirming Somalia’s territorial authority.
Under the agreement, Somalia and Ethiopia will begin technical
negotiations by February 2025, with plans to conclude them within four months. These discussions will aim to establish commercial arrangements, potentially including contracts or leases, that serve the interests of both nations.
Leaders from Somalia and Ethiopia emphasized that the declaration “reaffirmed their respect and commitment to one another’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.”
