Earlier this week, Mozambique's President-elect Daniel Chapo announced a national reconciliation and dialogue initiative, which will involve political leaders, civil society, and communities, aimed at addressing grievances and fostering trust after the country experienced widespread unrest following the October elections.
South Africa wants to help Mozambique resolve the crisis the country is going through, said the special envoy of South African President
Cyril Ramaphosa Sydney Mufamadi, who visited Maputo and held talks with Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi.
"President Ramaphosa asked us to express the solidarity of his government and the people of South Africa with the people of Mozambique, and their willingness to assist in resolving the crisis. We received detailed information from our Mozambican friends about the nature of the problem, what is being done to address it, and what role they believe we, as neighbors, can play in the search for peace," Mufamadi was quoted as saying by Radio Moçambique.
On Monday, Mozambique's Constitutional Council
confirmed the victory of Daniel Chapo and the ruling party FRELIMO in the general elections held on October 9. The main opposition candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, refused to recognize the election results, accusing the authorities of fraud. He called on his supporters to hold protests, which led to extensive destruction in Mozambique.
The protests have been accompanied by road closures and destruction of public and private property. Communications between the capital, located in the south of the country, and the central and northern regions of Mozambique have been
cut off, media outlets said.
According to opposition reports, since the start of anti-government demonstrations on October 24, 261 people have died and 573 have been injured in clashes with the police.
