BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006. Russia's 2024 presidency of BRICS began with the joining of new members. Adding to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia; the latter has not formalized membership but participates in BRICS meetings.
The new BRICS members joining in 2024 have proven themselves to be energetic and professional partners, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and BRICS Sherpa Sergey Ryabkov told Russian media.
During the year of Russia's chairmanship of the group, almost everything from the planned program was implemented, he said.
According to Ryabkov, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia, which joined BRICS in 2024, have shown themselves to be "mature, well-trained, energetic partners." He added that there were no stalling and artificial delays in anything.
Ryabkov pointed to the creative contribution of many participants "to solving the most complex problems – such as creating a financial and banking infrastructure alternative to Western payment systems and related elements."

The Sherpa also said that BRICS is ready to consider Syria's application for membership if the new authorities confirm it, noting that the group is seriously considering applications from all countries, and Syria is no exception.
Ryabkov said that the association is not pushing anyone and respects all choices, stressing that this issue is too serious to chase after some formal indicators in terms of the composition of participants.
