Ethiopia possesses vast renewable energy resources (hydro, wind, solar, geothermal) with the potential to generate 60,000 TWh within 10 years, fueling economic growth and meeting high electricity demand from its 110 million population. Currently, however, Ethiopia only produces 14 TWh and exports other resources.
The East Africa Electric Highway project enables trial power transmission from Kenya to Tanzania, local media reported.
The move follows a successful launch of the Ethiopia-Kenya power link, paving the way for a fully operational regional grid and solidifying Ethiopia's role as a renewable energy hub in East Africa.
The East Africa Electric Highway is expected to boost regional cooperation by providing reliable, affordable, renewable energy. Ethiopia is likely to increase green electricity exports, generating an estimated $200 million annually and supporting sustainable economic growth while advancing regional environmental goals.
